Hebrews 13:5-6

Protecting Our Faith

“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Hebrews 13:5-6)

The Holy Spirit repeats similar words in 1 Timothy 6:6, “But godliness with contentment is great gain” and in 1 Timothy 6:10, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” The wisdom of Hebrews 13:5 seeks to protect our faith in Jesus and keep our lives joyful to serve God, because the love of money creates two powerful vices: a wandering from the faith and a piercing with many sorrows.

Likewise, Ecclesiastes 7:12 says: “Wisdom and money can get you almost anything, but only wisdom can save your life.” While it is true that money is a kind of defence, yet this verse clearly promotes godly wisdom above all saying “only wisdom can save your life.” So, Hebrews 13:5 reminds us of a promise: “God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” This promise makes us declare confidently: “The Lord is my Helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” This is a profound wisdom and revelation of God’s sufficiency for us. So, in every desire, let’s choose contentment still and trust God, for He is able to supply all our needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Amen.
