No Longer About Me
“In her deep anguish, Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life….” (1 Samuel 1:10-11)
Isn’t it noteworthy that a woman, who was without a child for many years became a mother of many? “And the Lord was gracious to Hannah; she gave birth to three sons and two daughters” (1 Samuel 2:21). The Bible says the Lord was gracious. This tells us the Lord is more than able in every circumstance. Hannah’s prayer reflected this. “Remember me… then I will give him (Samuel) to the Lord for all the days of his life.” Hannah came to the end of herself. More than the mockery, more than the rivalry, more than the ‘barrenness.’ Now, it was for the Lord.
Hannah brought the boy Samuel to Eli and said: “I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord” (1 Samuel 1:27). His whole life! Samuel indeed became a great prophet and judge of Israel. Jesus said: “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it” (Matthew 10:39). Is that request or desire about me, my status or my praise? Can it now be wholly for the Lord, where we now say, ‘Lord, I give it all to You for all the days'?
