“When you were dead in your trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our trespasses, having cancelled the debt ascribed to us in the decrees that stood against us. He took it away, nailing it to the cross! And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross” (Colossians 2:13-15)

Oh, we need not be in a hurry to glance over these revelations by the Holy Spirit, but patiently and continually receive them about who we were and what we have now become. Who were we? “Dead in your trespasses.” We were lifeless, offering nothing. Our nature had no glow and glory, but gloom before the glorious God, yet this same God “made you alive with Christ.” Praise God! Oh, may the riches of this truth find root and expressions in our hearts always. Jesus decided, not on our merit, to forgive not some, not most, but “all our trespasses.”

Nothing humbles our hearts to realise that our worthlessness met with God’s radiant excellence! By Christ’s sacrifice, God “cancelled the debt ascribed to us in the decrees that stood against us.” There’s a weight that’s lifted off one’s shoulders when someone cancels our own debt on our behalf. Yes, Jesus did that. But how He did this is still the most absorbing and humbling way of it all. “He took it away, nailing it to the cross.” Some see the cross as a symbol of defeat, but it’s a symbol of God’s excellent victory! Glory to God!

Father, thank You for the glorious triumph on the cross!
