“What if God had not been on our side? Let all Israel admit this! What if God had not been there for us?” (Psalm 124:1-2)
Just as the psalmist put forth this question towards the nation of Israel, we too are asked the same this morning: “What if God had not been on our side?” The psalmist rightly advances the outcome that would have been: “Our enemies, in their violent anger, would have swallowed us up alive! The nations, with their flood of rage, would have swept us away, and we would have drowned and perished beneath their torrent of terror!” (Psalm 124:3-5). This question urges us at this moment to stop and reflect deeply and we will return in thanksgiving before the Lord.
Hence, the psalmist continues: “We can praise God over and over that He never left us! God wouldn’t allow the terror of our enemies to defeat us. We are free from the hunter’s trap; their snare is broken and we have escaped!” (Psalm 124:6-7). The sum of all ours reflections would end in this statement: “He never left us.” We may yet struggle to see it in our worldview in a case, but this conclusion stands true, just as a songwriter sang: ‘I am standing here, ONLY BECAUSE You made a way.’
Colossians 2:9-10 reveals this restful assurance to Christ’s fruits: “For He (Christ) is the complete fullness of deity living in human form. And our own completeness is now found in Him. We are completely filled with God as Christ’s fullness overflows within us. He is the Head of every kingdom and authority in the universe!” Jesus is Head of all principality and power. Hallelujah! Surely, “we can praise God over and over again…”
