“Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies. Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life” (Proverbs 31:10-12)
Virtuous and capable. They are two remarkable qualities we should possess continually. Their worth is summarised in the next affirmations. Firstly, the one who possesses them is “more precious than rubies.” Rubies are gemstones. Some fine-quality rubies are worth a million dollars per carat. Yet a capable and virtuous person is worth more. Secondly, the one who possesses them can be trusted. Pharaoh entrusted his nation to Joseph, a foreigner (Genesis 41). “You shall be in charge of my palace” (Genesis 41:40). Before this moment, Potiphar had “put Joseph in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned” (Genesis 39:4). Thirdly, the one who possesses them “greatly enriches” the life of others. Joseph gave life to nations. Jesus, our Lord, is still giving life to many today. Fourthly, the one who possesses them “brings good, not harm all their days.” All through Joseph’s days, he brought good to all peoples. Jesus, our Saviour, brought good and still brings good (Acts 10:38).
2 Peter 1:5-8 sums the above this way: “So don’t lose a minute in building on what you’ve been given, complementing your basic faith with good character, spiritual understanding, alert discipline, passionate patience, reverent wonder, warm friendliness, and generous love, each dimension fitting into and developing the others. With these qualities active and growing in your lives, no grass will grow under your feet, no day will pass without its reward as you mature in your experience of our Master Jesus.” Amen.
