“In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin pledged in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary” (Matthew 1:26-27)
The choice of Joseph, a carpenter from Nazareth and Mary, a young modest woman, to become the parents of our Lord Jesus Christ reminds us of the endless possibilities with our God. They seemed like ordinary people yet God knew them and used them in extraordinary ways that still speak today. One quality they had is humility, a virtue God delights in all his children. Joseph was described as “faithful to the law” yet when he knew Mary was with child “he did not want to expose her to public disgrace” (Matthew 1:19). Mary described herself as the ‘maidservant’ of the Lord. She sang: “For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant” (Luke 1:48). Another quality they had is they believed the reports about them. When the angel revealed to Joseph who the child was, “he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife” (Matthew 1:24). Mary believed too saying: “Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).
Oh! May we likewise walk humbly and receive the things God has spoken and walk in them. Herein lies the strength of His words. Luke 1:37 says: “For with God nothing shall be impossible.” The English Revised Version says it profoundly: “For no word from God shall be void of power.” No word FROM GOD is without effect. “It always produces fruit” where God sends it (Isaiah 55:11). Father, humbly and boldly, we come.
