Therefore, thus says the Lord God: ‘Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; whoever believes will not act hastily.” (Isaiah 28:16)
The Lord spoke these words when the leaders of Israel, His people, placed their trust in others. He had said to them: “Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffing rulers in Jerusalem: You have struck a bargain with death, you say, and sold yourselves to the devil in exchange for his protection against the Assyrians. “They can never touch us,” you say, “for we are under the care of one who will deceive and fool them” (Isaiah 28:14-15).
Could we, in a haste, be looking unto men, or considering it or rushing into our own ideas? The Lord says: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation.” That’s assurance, so “whoever believes will not act hastily.” This implies the action of Israel’s leaders was by a lack of trust in God. Psalm 118:8 reminds us: “Far better to take refuge in God than trust in people; far better to take refuge in God than trust in celebrities.”
This stone, the sure foundation, is Jesus. Peter revealed in this way: “Whoever trusts in this stone as a foundation will never have cause to regret it. To you who trust Him, He’s a Stone to be proud of…” (1 Peter 2:6-7). Hallelujah! He’s the Chief Cornerstone. He can build us. No haste, but trust. “Welcome to the living Stone, the source of life” (1 Peter 2:4).
