“Listen, dear friends, to God’s truth, bend your ears to what I tell you. I’m chewing on the morsel of a proverb; I’ll let you in on the sweet old truths, stories we heard from our fathers, counsel we learned at our mother’s knee. We’re not keeping this to ourselves, we’re passing it along to the next generation— God’s fame and fortune, the marvellous things He has done” (Psalm 78:1-4)

A common phrase of the Israelites was “Our fathers have said…” They kept a culture of narrating God’s ways and acts to generations. Habakkuk, a prophet, prayed in the light saying: “God, I’ve heard what our ancestors say about You, and I’m stopped in my tracks, down on my knees. Do among us what You did among them. Work among us as You worked among them. And as You bring judgment, as You surely must, remember mercy” (Habakkuk 3:2).

Though Habakkuk lived in a time when things were rough for his people, yet his perspective changed when he recalled the truths about God Eternal from his ancestors. So, the psalmist sang further: “He (God) planted a witness in Jacob, set His Word firmly in Israel, then commanded our parents to teach it to their children so the next generation would know, and all the generations to come— know the truth and tell the stories so their children can trust in God, never forget the works of God but keep His commands to the letter” (Psalm 78:5-8).

Why did God do all these things? To stir our hearts to remember and trust in Him and walk delightfully in His commands. Father thank You for Your Word that reveals to us that Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Amen.
