“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (1 Timothy 6:10)

There is a needless grief (s) that can come upon us when we nurse an undue desire for money. It was this desire that halted the promising ministry of a man called Gehazi who had walked with the prophet Elisha. Elisha had rejected the gift of Naaman, who he had healed of his leprosy. However, the Bible says: “Gehazi pursued Naaman” (2 Kings 5:21) in order to get some gifts. It was also the undue affection for money that led to Judas’ demise (Matthew 27).

All kinds of evil, the Spirit says, find their root in the love of money. So, the Spirit exhorts: “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that” (1 Timothy 6:6-8). Instead, we embrace godliness with contentment. These fight against the “temptation and traps” of getting rich by any means. They also draw us away from “foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction” (1 Timothy 6:9). Instead, we “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness” (1 Timothy 6:11).

Could the grief(s) we are experiencing be rooted in an affection of wealth? Jesus assures us concerning our needs being met: “Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met” (Matthew 6:33). Father, teach us to trust You for your provisions.
