“God is educating you; that’s why you must never drop out. He’s treating you as dear children. This trouble you’re in isn’t punishment; it’s training, the normal experience of children. Only irresponsible parents leave children to fend for themselves. Would you prefer an irresponsible God? We respect our own parents for training and not spoiling us, so why not embrace God’s training so we can truly live? While we were children, our parents did what seemed best to them. But God is doing what is best for us, training us to live God’s holy best” (Hebrews 12:7-10)
There’s quite a lot happening in our world, with troubles and challenges of diverse kinds, near and afar, yet God’s love remains unscathed for His children. The NIV says: “Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as His children.” God uses them to train us. This sure sounds like ‘tough love.’ Sometimes, it will appear difficult to see what good may come, but our Heavenly Father is a responsible Father. “God is doing what is best for us,” Hebrews says. He is the “Father of spirits” (Hebrews 12:9). So, He knows your spirit and mine and of all people. “No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way” (Hebrews 12:11).
What should our attitude be like? Hebrews 12:12-13 exhorts: “So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees. Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong.” Let’s embrace His sufficient grace! Amen.
