“Unto Thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto Thee do we give thanks: for that Thy name is near Thy wondrous works declare” (Psalm 75:1)

The Message version says: “We thank you, God, we thank you— Your Name is our favourite word; Your mighty works are all we talk about.” To whom do thanks belong? To God alone. This is where our flesh may wrestle for worth, wanting a share of the thanks been given. But “Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks.” What are we thankful for? Every day, God is so near. “Thy name is near.” Paul revealed this truth while speaking to the Athenians: “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth… He Himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else… From one man He made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth… God did this so that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though HE IS NOT FAR FROM ANY ONE OF US. ‘For in Him we live and move and have our being…’” (Acts 17:24-28).

Every day, God also does wondrous works. “O LORD my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them” (Psalm 40:5). This teaches us thanks giving must continue on and on. Receiving these truths will certainly quieten any boast from us. Instead, with joyful and humbled hearts we come singing, thanking and boasting in the Lord of wondrous works!
