“Martha, Martha! You are worried and troubled over so many things, but just one is needed. Mary has chosen the right thing, and it will not be taken away from her’” (Luke 10:41-42)

Someone might ask: ‘Was Jesus insensitive to Martha’s concern?’ Luke 10:40 says Martha was upset over all the work she had to do, while her sister Mary “sat down at the feet of the Lord and listened to his teaching.” She had welcomed Jesus into her home and prepare meals for her guests. A noble task. So, she came and said, “Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to come and help me!” Certainly, Jesus wasn’t insensitive. Instead, He made Martha understand that the spiritual meal is of a greater worth than the physical meal. He called Mary's choice “the right thing.” It wasn’t the first time Jesus expressed this perspective (John 4). In Matthew 4, He famously told the devil: “Human beings cannot live on bread alone, but need every word that God speaks.” True living is established on God’s everlasting words! Every implanted word we receive that God speaks breeds His abundant life in us and it will not be taken away. Hallelujah! Jeremiah attested to this when He said: “You (God) spoke to me, and I listened to every word. I belong to you, LORD God Almighty, and so Your words filled my heart with joy and happiness” (Jeremiah 15:16). Such are the words of God that fill with joy and happiness!

Father, how sweet are Your words, sweeter than honey to our mouth (Psalm 119)! May we feast on Your words continually and receive the abundant life ever present in Christ. Amen.
