“Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:30-31)
John explains the reason his gospel was written, recording the things Jesus did. First of all, that the hearers would “believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God.” Jesus did pray for His disciples (and us) saying: “Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent” (John 17:3). Through believing in Jesus, we are saved for eternity for “whoever has the Son has eternal life” (1 John 5:12). Praise the Lord! The second reason is now obvious: “that by believing you may have life in His name.” Jesus did say to us: “For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom He is pleased to give it” (John 5:21) and again He said: “I tell you the truth, those who listen to My message and believe in God who sent Me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life” (John 5:24). Such a glory!
Jesus wasn’t showing off performing signs and miracles. At Lazarus’s tomb, Jesus said to the Father: “You always hear Me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent Me” (John 11:42). The goodness He did (and still does) to us and others is to point all to Himself, who gives life abundantly. Let’s praise Jesus!
