“Don’t let them waste their time in endless discussion of myths and spiritual pedigrees. These things only lead to meaningless speculations, which don’t help people live a life of faith in God. The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith” (1 Timothy 1:3-5)

An inspired Paul states that the purpose of his instructions was not to express superior understanding or arguments or promote spiritual ideologies, but rather “that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.” Not some believers but all.

There is a love that is from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith and these are the qualities of God’s everlasting love (1 Corinthians 13). The gospel is about God’s love that saves and transforms even the vilest of sinners as we once were. When Jesus was tested about what the greatest law is, He said: “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.

A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39). Then, He said: “The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:40). So, every command of God from the beginning is actually carved out of His love. Paul did exhort: “Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.” Oh Father, show us the dimensions of Your love that we may love correctly and faithfully in every way like You do. Amen.
