“Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand” (Genesis 14:19-20)
These are the words of Melchizedek, the King of Salem to Abram, who had just returned from a war with four kings. With his 318 men, he defeated them and rescued his nephew Lot and other people with their goods. Melchizedek tells him some things in the face of victory. “Blessed be Abram….” Abram, you found favour in God’s eyes (Psalm 16:11). This God is the “Possessor of heaven and earth.” Abram, you have this victory because the God who showed you His favour is also the Possessor of heaven and earth. “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1). Melchizedek then tells him “And blessed be God Most High” meaning praises must be brought to God Most High. Why? He is the One who delivered your foes into your hands! The 318 men where well trained, the strategy was excellent (Genesis 14:15), but it was the Lord who made it victorious. “You can get horses ready for battle, but it is the LORD who gives victory” (Proverbs 21:31).
At these revelations, Abram, by Himself, worshipped the Lord by giving a tenth. Abram thanked the Lord and called Him “God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth” (Genesis 14:22) before the King of Sodom. We may have knowingly or unknowingly attributed victories to ourselves, and this position would make us think we are superior, but 1 Corinthians 4:7 says: “For who makes you so superior? What do you have that you did not receive?” Father, we give You thanks!
