“The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered… But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him… The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph” (Genesis 39:2, 20-21, 23)
This account of Joseph great inspires. Interestingly, the central figure in this account is not the visible Joseph, but the invisible God Himself, the Lord who held and carried him. It didn’t matter what Joseph’s season was: a slave or head of house or a prisoner, or a caregiver of prisoners or the prime minister of a nation. What mattered was God’s peace-giving presence with him and Joseph grew in it. Genesis 39:21 does say: “The Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favour in the eyes of the prison warden.” Kindness and favour followed him, just like the psalmist sang: “The Lord is my Shepherd… surely goodness and mercy shall follow me…” (Psalm 23). Joseph exhibited the kindness and favour he received towards others and kept a similar attitude in all his seasons. His vibrant visage, even while in prison, was able to see when others were sad (Genesis 40:6), a door God used in his life.
The Lord richly reminds us that no situation or position should define us, but His presence should. Faultlessly, “The Lord was with him” as described in Numbers 6:24-26 says: “May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you His favour and give you His peace.” Amen. This we now have received graciously through Jesus (Ephesians 1:3). Amen.
