“Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to Carmel. There he has set up a monument in his own honour and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal" (1 Samuel 15:12)
King Saul and Israel had a great victory at the word of the Lord. God had helped them to triumph totally over their adversary. Saul, however, drew the attention of the feat to himself. Firstly, he kept for himself what he needed to destroy. The Lord had said: “I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them” (1 Samuel 15:2-3). Then Saul took a step further and “set up a monument in his own honour.”
We, however, have a noble example from Daniel whose life was threatened by the decree of King Nebuchadnezzar. However, he got the victory as God revealed the king’s dreams to him and these were Daniel’s words. “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him. He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings and establishes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with Him. To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise” (Daniel 2:19-23). Daniel gave the honour to God in private, and before the king in public (Daniel 2:28,37).
What’s our monument going to look like? In our honour or the Lord’s? May we all say: ‘To You O God alone, I give thanks and praise!’
