“I give you thanks, O Lord, with all my heart; I will sing your praises before the gods. I bow before your holy Temple as I worship. I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness; for your promises are backed by all the honour of your name. As soon as I pray, you answer me; you encourage me by giving me strength (Psalm 138:1-3)

Lord, I will thank You! This is an uplifting attitude to start and end each day. The psalmist committed himself to praise the Lord even before the “gods.” One version says before the “armies of angels.” It doesn’t matter if the gods are those who bow before the Lord in submission or even the oppressive gods of this world in rebellion. “I will sing [make a psalm] to You.” He praised God for two things: His love and His loyalty. A songwriter sang that God’s love is loyal and this psalm affirms it. About God’s love, Psalm 103:17 says: “But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear Him, and His righteousness with their children’s children.” About His loyalty, Psalm 117:2 also says: “For His unfailing love for us is powerful; the LORD’s faithfulness endures forever. Praise the LORD!” Hallelujah! Psalm 100:5 puts them together wherein it says: “For the LORD is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and His faithfulness continues to each generation.” It comes as no surprise that God also delights to see love and faith from us (Colossians 1:4, Ephesians 1:15).

“Though the Lord is great, He cares for the humble, but He keeps His distance from the proud” (Psalm 138:6). The proud would neither praise nor give thanks. Humbly we go, to give Him His praise!
