“He was wounded for our rebellious acts. He was crushed for our sins. He was punished so that we could have peace, and we received healing from his wounds” (Isaiah 53:5)
When a teacher decides to punish an entire class for their misbehaviour, it can take the kindness of just one individual to change the outcome when he says, ‘Please do not punish them. I will take responsibility for their wrongs.’ Through such an action, an entire class will find peace. Such is the gift we received from Jesus! It didn’t come easy, but in God’s loving sight, it was worth it. Jesus brought us peace! Isaiah prophesied that He shall be called the “Prince of peace.” Now, Ephesians 2:14 says profoundly: “For He himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility.” God’s peace isn’t weak, but powerful. It destroys barriers and walls of hostility. Hallelujah! Jesus declared: “I've told you this so that My peace will be with you. In the world you'll have trouble. But cheer up! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
So, we too must love peace and pursue it for redemption, reconciliation and relationships. The Psalmist sang: “Seek peace and pursue it” (Psalm 34:14). We need to follow what leads to peace. “So then, let us pursue what leads to peace and to mutual edification” (Romans 14:19). Finally, Hebrews 12:14 says: “Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.” Maybe, we need to reach out with peace and we have the Holy Spirit who works His peace in us. Father, make us indeed instruments of Your peace. Amen.
