“When Abram was ninety-nine years old the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before Me, and be blameless” (Genesis 17:1)
Our journey of faith was never promised to be an easy path, yet it is an assured path because of Christ. God has said to Abram: “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you” (Genesis 12:2), yet along life's way, Abram had some ‘God had not said.’ Through Genesis 12 to 16, God had not said go to Egypt or bring out Hagar with you or take her as a wife or propose Eliezer as your heir. Like Abram, we have made mistakes, yet again the voice of grace calls to Abram saying: “I am God Almighty,” a call which makes Abram fall face down (Genesis 17:4). Don't stop now!
Then, God says: “Walk before Me, and be blameless.” The order is instructive. First, ‘walk before Me’, an assurance of His presence. One of the proven ways to train children walking to school, is to make them walk before their guide, where they are guided when distracted or stumbling and encouraged when tired. Isaiah 30:21 says: “Your own ears will hear Him. Right behind you a voice will say, ‘This is the way you should go.’” Walking before Him strengthens us over our past. When we turn, we only see Jesus, who stands between us and our past, inspiring us to move ahead. That’s grace! Abram became a different man. As we keep walking before Him, we become more and more mature. Oh! Father, teach us to hear and receive Jesus and His words and do them. Amen.
