“This should be your ambition: to live a quiet life, minding your own business and doing your own work, just as we told you before. As a result, people who are not Christians will trust and respect you, and you will not need to depend on others for enough money to pay your bills” (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12)
It is an assuring truth that God blesses the works of our hands (Deuteronomy 28:12). Hence, in exhorting the believers in Thessalonica to embrace work, Paul did write: “For even while we were with you, we gave you this command: If anyone is unwilling to work, he shall not eat” (2 Thessalonians 3:10). Certainly, our Father works, so we too must work. In Exodus 14:13-14, as Moses and all Israel stood before the Red Sea, Moses said: “Don’t be afraid. Just stand where you are and watch, and you will see the wonderful way the Lord will rescue you today. The Egyptians you are looking at—you will never see them again. The Lord will fight for you, and you won’t need to lift a finger!” To this, Exodus 14:15 now says: “Then the Lord said to Moses, “Quit praying and get the people moving! Forward, march!” At this point, God needed them to move, to step up and step out. One thing was guaranteed: God was with them. Such was the attitude of Ruth. Ruth 2:3 says: “One day Ruth said to Naomi, ‘Perhaps I can go out into the fields of some kind man to glean the free grain behind his reapers.’” ONE DAY. A day came and Ruth realized that she needed to step up and step out. Father, we arise. We receive Your ability (Deuteronomy 8:18) to work our hands into productivity for Your glory. Amen.
