“Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” (Acts 8:26-29)

Philip had just witnessed a great revival in the city of Samaria. He proclaimed “the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ.” The people “paid close attention to what he said” and “there was great joy in that city.” The exploits were so manifold that the church in Jerusalem sent the apostles Peter and John to Samaria.

From the exploits at Samaria, Philip, at the word of the Lord, was led to a lonely desert road where there was nobody, but a man journeying home, who was confused at what he read. Interestingly however, this man was described as “an important official in charge of all the treasury” of the queen of Ethiopia. A big financial break in sight for Philip? In all these, Philip remained focused on the One who sent him. Engaging the eunuch, Philip “told him the good news about Jesus”, the very same news he told them in Samaria! Just as Samaria was great in joy, so this eunuch, "went on his way rejoicing” (Acts 8:39).

Father, help us to remain focused and consistent in everything we do in Jesus’ name. Amen.
