“So then, my soul, why would you be depressed? Why would you sink into despair? Just keep hoping and waiting on God, your Saviour. For no matter what, I will still sing with praise, for you are my saving grace! Here I am depressed and downcast. Yet I will still remember you as I ponder the place where your glory streams down from the mighty mountaintops, lofty and majestic—the mountains of your awesome presence” (Psalm 42:5-6)
Research reveals that 70% of self-talk is negative or self-critical. That’s a staggering percentage. So, speaking the life words of God to oneself is a practice we must sustain, a conscious attitude to maintain. David, in a time of personal conflict, intently talked to his soul again and again. “My soul, why would you be depressed? Why would you sink into despair? Just keep hoping and waiting on God, your Saviour.” In the earlier (4th) verse, he began by reminding his soul: “So I speak over my heartbroken soul, ‘Take courage. Remember when you used to be right out front leading the procession of praise when the great crowd of worshippers gathered to go into the presence of the Lord? You shouted with joy as the sound of passionate celebration filled the air and the joyous multitude of lovers honoured the feast of the Lord!’” That’s also a way to provoke gratitude. Even in a depressed and downcast state, he said “Yet I will still remember You (Lord)…” Our Source! So, as Ephesians 5:19 exhorts us: “Keep speaking to each other with words of Scripture, singing the psalms with praises and spontaneous songs given by the Spirit!” In this way, the Spirit Himself will fill us! Praise the Lord.
