“And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land” (Genesis 13:7)

Interpersonal conflicts will always involve two or more people, yet every conflict will lose its strength when one party chooses the path of peace instead. In the account above, the same herdsmen who quarrelled would walk the path of peace chosen and offered by Abraham who wanted no conflict. “Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee,” Abraham said “and between my herdsmen and thy herdsmen; for we be brethren” (Genesis 13:12). There’s a delightsome harvest that accompanies this virtue. James 3:18 says: “Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.” The finest of examples is of the Lord Jesus Himself. He dealt with the conflict between God and man, when He offered His peace. Isaiah 53:5 reveals that “upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace.” Ephesians 2:14 declares: “For He Himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in His flesh the dividing wall of hostility.” We have become the harvest of His peace!

God calls peacemakers His children. “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God” (Matthew 5:9). So, peace truly depends on us as the scripture says: “Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone” (Romans 12:14). As we grow above conflicts, embracing peace instead, Philippians 2:14-15 says we become “blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine as lights in the world.” Let’s remember the cross, where Jesus offered His peace for us, so we too may offer same to others.
