“I will freely sacrifice to You; I will praise Your name, O Lord, for it is good. For He has delivered me out of all trouble; and my eye has seen its desire upon my enemies” (Psalm 54:6-7)

In yesterday’s reflection, we learned how the psalmist had a decisive faith shift, from being in despair to becoming confident in the Lord and in His might, when he paused and thought and thanked the Lord. His new expressions didn’t end there. He sang those verses above: “I will freely sacrifice to You.…” It is a good thing to freely offer sacrifices to God and the best sacrifice is the sacrifice of ourselves, our own lives. The Passion Translation says Psalm 54:6 it this way: “Lord, I will offer myself freely, and everything I am I give to you.”

In Genesis 28, Jacob fled from his home as tensions arose between himself and his brother Esau. In his despair, he slept in an unknown place at sunset, but in that resting place, God spoke to him. Jacob would say in awe: “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was unaware of it… How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God” (Genesis 28:16-17). A faith shift happened! Jacob took the same stone on which he rested, which gave him succour and made it into a pillar to God and “poured oil on top of it, and he called that place Bethel” (Genesis 28:18-19). He gave Himself freely (Genesis 28:20-22).

Oh how we need to hear God’s word speak to us as we pause, think and thank. We’ll say like David, “I will sacrifice freely… I will praise Your name O Lord… for it is good.”
