“David was in an extremely difficult position because the troops talked about stoning him, for they were all very bitter over the loss of their sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God” (1 Samuel 30:6)
These men had had successes walking with David, but on this occasion, they turned on him over the “loss of their sons and daughters.” A common reaction of the blame game is to “throw stones” at others. Studies have shown that unsuccessful people often throw blames at others, while successful people take responsibility instead. The former represents 95% of the population and the latter only 5%! While the situation made David very distressed, yet David towed the path of responsibility, by first of all finding “strength in the LORD his God.” He looked for a way out, and he would famously inquire of the Lord saying: “Should I pursue these raiders? Will I overtake them?” God approved. It’s remarkable that the same men who earlier thought of stoning him would still follow him at the promise of the Lord.
Is there a situation that look hopeless or out of sight? It may require someone taking responsibility to see something happen, a time to step out and that someone maybe you. It may not be simple or easy. For David, it required him assuming a priestly responsibility, requesting for the ephod. Yet, God proved to be faithful. “David recovered everything… Nothing was missing, young or old, son or daughter, or any of the plunder… David brought everything back. And he recovered all the flocks and herds.” His men, the same men, called out: “This is David’s plunder!” (1 Samuel 30:18-20).
