“Who will protect me from the wicked? Who will stand up for me against evildoers? Unless the Lord had helped me, I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave. I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me. When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer” (Psalm 94:16-19)
Do you feel helpless or defenceless because of a raging adversary or the uncertainty that lurks in darkness? The psalmist felt that way too. He heard the wicked speaking in arrogance, gloating over their wicked deeds, crushing the Lord’s people, killing widows, foreigners and orphans (Psalm 94:3-5). These people mocked saying: “The God of Israel doesn’t care.” Maybe you have heard same, that God doesn’t care. It’s the devil’s lie. God’s truth says: “Let Him have all your worries and cares, for He is always thinking about you and watching everything that concerns you” (1 Peter 5:7). This the psalmist saw: “Unless the Lord had helped me, I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave.” The Lord is a “tested help in times of trouble” (Psalm 46:1). Hallelujah! The God of justice hears when His people cry to Him for help. Exodus 2:23-24 recounts: “The Israelis were groaning beneath their burdens, in deep trouble because of their slavery, and weeping bitterly before the Lord. He heard their cries from heaven…”
He hears! The psalmist testified: “Your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me.” His love is greater than fear, a perfect love that drives out fear (1 John 4:18). Even when doubts FILLED his mind, God’s comfort was greater! Father, you keep in perfect peace whose minds stay on You (Isaiah 26:3). Amen.
