“Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you! I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer. You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy” (Psalm 63:3-5)
David sang this psalm while he was in the wilderness of Judah. How does a man resolve to sing at such times? He began by singing: “O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole-body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory” (Psalm 63:1-2). David firstly acknowledges: “O God, you are my God.” If God had been with me before, then God will be will me now (Hebrews 13:5-6). That’s the character of God’s unfailing love, saying: “Your unfailing love is better than life itself.”
Romans 8:38-39 likewise declares: “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Hallelujah!
So, even in the desert place, David looked for the Lord, earnestly searching and thirsting for Him. All rays of hope maybe gone, but there remains one! “Yet there is one ray of hope: His compassion never ends” (Lamentations 3:21-22)! Praise Him!
