“God presides in the great assembly; He renders judgment among the “gods”: “How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked” (Psalm 82:1-4)
It is no surprise that there are people who hand down unjust decisions by favouring the wicked or the influential. God knew this would happen when He spoke to the people through Moses saying: “You must not act unjustly when deciding a case. Do not be partial to the poor or give preference to the rich; judge your neighbour fairly” (Leviticus 19:15). These unjust decisions easily become injurious to others and a society, especially the weak and defenceless. Yet there is God who presides over heaven’s court, whose judgments are greater and better than those of earthly ‘gods’.
Psalm 68:5 says: “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy dwelling.” This understanding should prompt us to work with God and pursue a defence for the defenceless in our midst. Psalm 113:7-9 speaks about God’s ability in these situations: “He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the dump to seat them with nobles, with the princes of His people. He settles the barren woman in her home as a joyful mother to her children.”
Are there persons around you needing your voice or your acts? Isaiah urges us: “Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows” (Isaiah 1:17). Praise the Lord.
