“Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise His name; proclaim His salvation day after day. Declare His glory among the nations, His marvellous deeds among all peoples” (Psalm 96:1-3)

Three times in these verses the Spirit says: “Sing to the Lord.” This is an emphatic call to sing to the Lord a new song. The reason is plain when we consider the eternality of God. So, Psalm 96 continues: “For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Splendour and majesty are before him; strength and glory are in his sanctuary” (Psalm 96:4-6).

There may be many gods in the earth, gods who want to us to become afraid, discouraged or distressed in life, but our Lord is above them all, so we ‘sing to the Lord.’ In fact, these gods are nothing but idols, systems made by human hands, yet our Lord who made all hands “made the heavens,” so we ‘sing to the Lord.’ The beauty of everything we see and the splendour of all things proceed from Him, so we ‘sing to the Lord.’ The strength to rise comes from Him who is never weary, even the glory of all things dwells with Him, so we ‘sing to the Lord.’

Surely, we should sing always to the Lord for He does not change. “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). Let’s think about Him and sing! Truly, as Proverbs 17:22 says: “A happy heart is good medicine and a joyful mind causes healing…”
