“Actually, I don’t have a sense of needing anything personally. I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am” (Philippians 4)

These are the inspired words of Paul who was confined to the prison for the gospel’s sake. How content could a man be in such a state? Now, Paul wasn’t saying he was pleased to be in the prison or having no desire to be free. Contentment doesn’t mean being idle or complacent. It doesn’t mean not desiring something better (but free from greed). However, contentment places a focus and trust in the sovereignty of God, that He takes a genuine interest in us. This drives the worries and cares of life far from us. When David saw (Psalm 37) how the wicked were being envied by believers because these wicked ones seemingly prospered in their ways, he left us this remarkable testimony: “I have been young and now I am old. And in all my years I have never seen the Lord forsake a man who loves Him; nor have I seen the children of the godly go hungry.” David continued: “Instead, the godly are able to be generous with their gifts and loans to others, and their children are a blessing” (Psalm 37:25-26).

Paul truly loved Jesus. So, like Paul, we too can make it through anything in the One who makes us who we are. May we love Him, turn to Him and find sufficiency in every situation.
