“From the moment of His baptism, Jesus overflowed with the Holy Spirit. He was taken by the Spirit from the Jordan into the wilderness of Judea to experience for forty days the ordeal of testing by the accuser. He ate no food during this time….” (Luke 4:1-2)
The reassuring presence of the Holy Spirit even in the pathways of life. One of the great promises of Jesus to His followers is seen in John 14:15-16. Jesus said: “Loving Me empowers you to obey My commands. And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Comforter, the Holy Spirit of Truth, who will be to you a friend just like Me—and He will never leave you.” To keep God’s commands, Jesus knows we need the Holy Spirit’s presence. Jesus Himself had witnessed this. He was led by the same Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days and night, the devil tempted Him. Yet in those forty days, Jesus triumphed because the Holy Spirit guided him and stayed with Him. So, Jesus encourages us too saying the Holy Spirit “will never leave you.” He wants to make us holy like Jesus in power, so He stays in us to “continually revitalize you, implanting within you the passion to do what pleases Him” (Philippians 2:13).
After those days of His testing, Luke 4 now says: “Then Jesus, armed with the Holy Spirit’s power, returned to Galilee, and His fame spread throughout the region. He taught in the synagogues and they glorified Him” (Luke 4:14-15). Glory! The Spirit went with Him and He returned with Him in victory! Sweet Holy Spirit, lead us and glorify Jesus in us. Amen.
