“On the Sabbath, He gave a lecture in the meeting place. He stole the show, impressing everyone. “We had no idea He was this good!” they said. “How did He get so wise all of a sudden, get such ability?” But in the next breath they were cutting Him down: “He’s just a carpenter—Mary’s boy. We’ve known Him since He was a kid. We know his brothers, James, Justus, Jude, and Simon, and his sisters. Who does He think He is?” They tripped over what little they knew about Him and fell, sprawling. And they never got any further” (Mark 6:1-3)

Someone said: "The unhappiest people in this world, are those who care the most about what other people think." This is quite true. While we must listen to godly wisdom through others, yet we must be mindful that these align with God’s thoughts and words. In the text above, while teaching, Jesus left the people amazed by the truth and wisdom of His words and abilities. Yet, in a flip moment, the same people openly spoke lowly of Him, of his family’s status and His trade. However, Jesus already had a posture that guarded Him in situations as these.

In John 2:23-25, John recounts that because of the miracles Jesus did while in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, “many people were convinced that He was indeed the Messiah.” However, “Jesus didn’t trust them, for He knew mankind to the core. No one needed to tell Him how changeable human nature is!” We cannot build our lives on the opinions of others, but the infallible opinion of God’s word. Our view and worth are in what God says and what approves about us.
