Of A Necessity

“Yet preaching the Good News is not something I can boast about. I am compelled by God to do it. How terrible for me if I didn’t preach the Good News! If I were doing this on my own initiative, I would deserve payment. But I have no choice, for God has given me this sacred trust” (1 Corinthians 9:16-17)
There’s a necessity that God urges us to have. This is the necessity of preaching the word of God. This implies it is needful, something we shouldn’t ignore or do away it. Paul said he didn’t do it on his own initiative. Rather, it was given to him, just as Jesus gave it to us (Matthew 28). How valuable is this necessity? Jesus said it this way: “God’s Spirit is on Me; He’s chosen Me to preach the Message of good news to the poor, sent Me to announce pardon to prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to set the burdened and battered free, to announce, ‘This is God’s time to shine!’” (Luke 4:18). The preaching of the gospel is a light to a dark and hurting world. Each time the word is preached, there are transforming fruits of pardon, sight, burdens lifted, oppressed free! Hence, Paul would say: “How terrible for me if I didn’t preach the Good News!” During Paul’s time, many didn’t preach unless there was a material gain, but Paul said: “What then is my pay? It is the opportunity to preach the Good News without charging anyone” (1 Corinthians 9:18)
So, we are charged to “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction” (2 Timothy 4:2). So, help us Lord. Amen.
