“Suddenly an angel shook him awake and said, “Get up and eat!” He looked around and, to his surprise, right by his head were a loaf of bread baked on some coals and a jug of water” (1 Kings 19:5-6)

Giving up isn’t the plan. “Get up and eat.” God wasn’t appeasing Elijah, but reviving and instructing him. The angel shook him until he awoke and said: “Get up and eat.” Elijah had said: “Enough of this, God! Take my life—I’m ready to join my ancestors…” (1 Kings 19:4). He was exhausted with life, but it wasn’t an option with God. As he slept again, “the angel of God came back, shook him awake again, and said, “Get up and eat some more—you’ve got a long journey ahead of you” (1 Kings 19:7). God was steady. “Get up and eat SOME MORE.” Why? “You have a long journey ahead of you.”

It wasn’t a short plan. God looked beyond the now with glows of optimism. Elijah got up, “ate and drank his fill, and set out.” Nourished by that meal, he walked forty days and nights, all the way to the mountain of God. But again, he slept, and again the Lord said: “So Elijah, what are you doing here?” Then, in his limited view, Elijah complained about how things were, but again the Lord said: “Go, stand on the mountain at attention before God. God will pass by” (1 Kings 19:12).

The Lord has not given up on you. We may just have to get used to it, so we mustn’t give up. He assures: “I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you” (Hebrews 13:5).
