“’You do not want to leave too, do you?’ Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that You are the Holy One of God’” (John 6:68-69)
Everything seemed fine right until this point. Five thousand men (not counting women and children) had been miraculously fed and the people said: “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world” (John 6:14). They swarmed around Jesus, but everything began to change when He spoke to them about eternal things. “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for Me, not because you saw the signs I performed, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life” (John 6:26-27). They followed Jesus because of what they ate. Jesus again said: “I am the bread of life… For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day” (John 6:35,40). At these words, the people’s countenance changed from grumbling (John 6:41) to sharply arguing among themselves (John 6:52) to finally turning away from Jesus (John 6:66).
The Holy Spirit does ask: ‘Are we offended or switch off when we hear about eternal things?’ If so, it might mean we are becoming too comfortable in a world that will pass away someday. However, Peter, who had left his fishing nets despite a great catch, remained because he found what was better and long-lasting: Jesus has “the words of eternal life.” Hallelujah!
