Misunderstood?
“People passing along the road jeered, shaking their heads in mock lament: “You bragged that you could tear down the Temple and then rebuild it in three days—so show us your stuff! Save yourself! If you’re really God’s Son, come down from that cross!” (Matthew 27:39-40)
We’ll sometimes be misunderstood by others and it may end in mockery. David was misunderstood by his brother. In 1 Samuel 17, he came to the warfront to deliver some food to his brothers. As he arrived, he heard Goliath’s taunts and inquired about it. His brother saw him and angrily said: “What are you doing around here anyway? What about those few sheep you’re supposed to be taking care of? I know about your pride and deceit. You just want to see the battle!” (1 Samuel 17:28). David replied: “What have I done now?” He took a healthy decision. “He walked over to some others and asked them the same thing” (1 Samuel 17:30). He didn’t allow his brother’s words dampen his spirit.
Someone wrote about being misunderstood: “Let them judge you. Let them misunderstand you. Let them gossip about you. Their opinions aren’t your problem. You stay kind, committed to love, and free in your authenticity. No matter what they do or say, don’t you dare doubt your worth or the beauty of your truth. Just keep on shining like you do.” All these were done to Jesus, yet He kept His shine. The people didn’t understand Jesus lived to show them the Father and would die so they would find the way to get there. Jesus, however, prayed: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). He forgave them. Let’s look up like Jesus did, so we can move on gracefully.
