“But God's mercy is so abundant, and His love for us is so great, that while we were spiritually dead in our disobedience, He brought us to life with Christ. It is by God's grace that you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:4-5)

A preacher rightly said: ‘Jesus did not come to make bad people good, but He came to make dead people alive.’” The NIV translation says: “But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.” Such is this free gift of God through Jesus. Jesus, described as the ‘last Adam’, is a “life-giving spirit” (1 Corinthians 15:45). God made this possible out of His great love, and His mercy proceeded from it. We too, by the same spirit at work in us, can bring His life to dead situations. It surely begins in us, wherein Jesus says: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” He called it the first and greatest commandment. Then He says: “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Matthew 22:39-40).

Love is life indeed. John did write certainly saying: “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.” Being made alive implies walking in Christ's love and this love breeds life’s fruits in/from us of “joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23). Father, purge me from all dead works and make me alive in Christ! Amen.
