“So, they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified. They will rebuild the ancient ruins; they will restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities, the desolations of many generations” (Isaiah 61:3-4)
God describes us as “oaks of righteousness.” The oak tree is strong and hard, heavy and compact and very resistant to insects and fungus. The aroma of the oak wood is seen in its usage: in furniture, flooring, panelling, decking and so many more noble things. Like the oak tree, God’s word says to us: “But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of Him everywhere” (2 Corinthians 2:14).
God has purposed that we become a savour on the earth and quite frequently does the Word of God describes us with the noble example of trees. But we need to be planted where the Lord ordains, rooted in Him. Trees maybe rooted, yet where planted, they are fruitful. The psalmist sang about the blessed man: “He is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither, and who prospers in all he does” (Psalm 1:3).
As God’s tree, He wants to use us to “rebuild the ancient ruins.” We become life-giving. Where there was a devastation in lives, homes or places, He says “they will restore the places long devastated," even where there have been miseries for many generations! Jesus promised: “The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit” (John 15:5). Father, plant us according to Your perfect will for Your glory. Amen.
