“But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever. For what you have done I will always praise you in the presence of your faithful people. And I will hope in your name, for your name is good” (Psalm 52:8-9)
The psalmist looked at the dire situation around him brought about by evil ones. He wrote about them saying: “Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero? Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God? You who practice deceit, your tongue plots destruction; it is like a sharpened razor. You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking the truth” (Psalm 52:1-4).
There is so much evil in our days too. When the evil ones triumph, we may begin to waver if we aren’t deeply rooted in God. Psalm 37:1 says: “Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong.” In tough times, we must remain connected to Jesus. Hence, the psalmist says: “I am like an olive tree.” An olive tree, with a large trunk, is an evergreen tree that can live and produce olives for more than a century. One unique ability of the olive tree is how it adapts and develops its roots continually. Its roots spread vertically and horizontally to receive more and more water to remain hydrated in tough conditions.
We too can develop our roots as we walk trusting in God’s unfailing love, praise Him in the presence of His faithful ones and hope in His good name. Praise the Lord!
