“So don’t hide your light! Let it shine brightly before others, so that your commendable works will shine as light upon them, and then they will give their praise to your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16)

Good works have light in them! Jesus reveals that commendable works, done in His name, have the innate capacity to shine light on others. This helps us to see good works in a divine sense. They shine God’s light. When this light shines, it doesn’t illuminate just the subject of interest, it also shines into the environment of that subject. In Luke 18, Jesus met a blind beggar who said to him “Please, I want to see,” to whom Jesus replied: “Now you will see. Receive your sight this moment, for your faith in Me has given you sight and new life” (Luke 18:41-42). Instantly the man could see, “and he followed Jesus, praising God.” Jesus shone the light of God into his life. He praised God, but this account doesn’t end there. Luke 18:43 says: “And all who saw it praised God, too.” The light we shine, in the Lord's name, can multiply life!

So, Galatians 6:9 exhorts us: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” We don’t reap a seed, but a harvest. It multiplies. “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers” (Galatians 6:10). God Himself is our source. He called us out of darkness to experience His marvellous light, and “He did this so that you would broadcast His glorious wonders throughout the world” (1 Peter 2:10). Amen.
