“Even the despised tax collectors came to John to be baptized, and they asked him, “What are we to do to prove our hearts have changed?” “Be honest,” he replied. “Don’t demand more taxes than what the law requires.” (Luke 3:12-13)
John taught the people to deal honestly in their affairs. Proverbs 11 begins with this declaration: “Dishonest business practice is something that Yahweh truly hates. But it pleases Him when we apply the right standards of measurement.” The tax collectors abused their office, demanding more than was required. In such a situation, oppression exists, the receiving and giving of bribes prevails, hence creating an unjust and corrupt system.
Deuteronomy 16:19 says: “Do not deny justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.” This was the similar case of Eli’s sons. “They turned aside toward dishonest gain, accepting bribes and perverting justice” (1 Samuel 8:3).
Zacchaeus, a tax collector, was famous for excessive taxing. However, he was so amazed over the gracious visit of Jesus to his home and said: “Half of all that I own I will give to the poor. And Lord, if I have cheated anyone, I promise to pay them back four times as much as I stole” (Luke 19:8). Grace!
Since Jesus is in our lives, He delights to make a difference. So, if we have dealt dishonestly with anyone, or charged more than we ought, we can make amends gracefully. It pleases God. Let the Holy Spirit lead us. Jesus said to Zacchaeus afterwards: “Life has come to you and your household.” Glory!
