“Now that you’ve cleaned up your lives by following the truth, love one another as if your lives depended on it. Your new life is not like your old life. Your old birth came from mortal sperm; your new birth comes from God’s living Word. Just think: a life conceived by God himself!” (1 Peter 1: 22-24)

Let’s pause and “just think.” Through the Spirit, Peter makes an emphasis for us to realise the kind of life we received and have been brought into. So, there’s an earnestness for us to know this life which was “conceived by God himself.” Ecclesiastes 10:7 described an unusual sight saying: “I have even seen servants riding horseback like princes—and princes walking like servants!” What we’ve been called into is a life that has “forever” in it. It’s not like our old life. Peter wrote: “The old life is a grass life, its beauty as short-lived as wildflowers; grass dries up, flowers wilt, God’s Word goes on and on forever. This is the Word that conceived the new life in you” (1 Peter 1:24-25). Hallelujah! John likewise revealed this new life saying: “But whoever did want Him (Jesus), who believed He (Jesus) was who He claimed and would do what He said, He made to be their true selves, their child-of-God selves. These (who believed) are the God-begotten, not blood-begotten, not flesh-begotten, not sex-begotten” (John 1:12).

Truly, the old life was self-centred, self-willing and self-seeking and it fades, but this new life conceived by God Himself lives to love and to do just like Christ. Father, reveal to me again and again the real deal: the life-light of Jesus. Amen.
