ā€œMay King Darius live forever! The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ denā€ (Daniel 6:6-7)

Just the next thirty days! What could have raced in Daniel’s mind at this decree? What advice did he receive from others? ā€˜It’s only for 30 days Daniel’, someone might say. ā€˜Daniel, you're our hope in this exile; we need you alive.’ ā€˜It’s not the end of the world if you don’t pray for some weeks.’ So much human wisdom can spring up in times as these.

We face situations as these too. Maybe its even for a day or a week. May God give us His right wisdom. Daniel knew it was a decree against the Lord and his faith. He wouldn’t deny the Lord, so ā€œthree times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done beforeā€ (Daniel 6:10). It did look like the worst was happening when he was thrown into the den, but God showed His redeeming grace and rescued him. The king made a new decree: ā€œI issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. For He is the living God and He endures forever; His kingdom will not be destroyed, His dominion will never end.ā€

How impactful Daniel’s stance became. ā€œStand up for Me against world opinion, and I’ll stand up for you before My Fatherā€ (Matthew 10:32). God was glorified before all. The king who suspended God’s mandate now promoted the same God. Father, strengthen us to do this. Amen.
