In Their Midst

“While they were still talking about this, Jesus Himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you’” (Luke 24:36)

How greatly Jesus wants to be in lives. Among His disciples, there were diverse reports about the empty tomb. They talked to one another, trying to make sense of the things happening. Right there in the midst, Jesus HIMSELF stood among them. He didn’t send an angel, but came Himself with words to dispel the chaos: “Peace be with you.” Jesus did promise: “I’m telling you these things while I’m still living with you. The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at My request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you. I’m leaving you well and whole. That’s my parting gift to you. Peace. I don’t leave you the way you’re used to being left—feeling abandoned, bereft. So don’t be upset. Don’t be distraught” (John 14:25-27).

God speaks peace today through the Word (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit in us. As the Holy Spirit reminds us of the things Jesus had said, it yields His peace to us. Hence, when Jesus stood among His disciples, He said to them: “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms” (Luke 24:44), but they didn’t remember these things.

Now, we have the Holy Spirit. Father, thank you for the Holy Spirit, who knows how to bring to remembrance the things we have heard from Jesus. Cause us to hear Jesus and know His amazing peace. Amen.
