“Beside the rivers of Babylon we thought about Jerusalem, and we sat down and cried. We hung our small harps on the willow trees. Our enemies had brought us here as their prisoners, and now they wanted us to sing and entertain them. They insulted us and shouted, “Sing about Zion!” (Psalm 137:1-3)
These Jewish exiles were at the lowest ebb of their lives, being captives decrying their awful state. They could not sing, but their sadness had a voice. To pile on their sadness, their captors mocked them to sing, saying: “Make music for us and sing one of your happy Zion-songs!” The faithful truth remains that God is everywhere, and we can sing but to the Lord! 1 Kings 20:28 recounts: “This is what the LORD says: Because the Arameans think the LORD is a god of the hills and not a god of the valleys, I will deliver this vast army into your hands, and you will know that I am the LORD.'" Sing to the Lord in your valley or mountain! Acts 16:25-26 reminds us that Paul and Silas, in exuberance, prayed and sang to the Lord, from the innermost parts of the prison. The other prisoners listened to them and God decided to honour them with a release and also saved families too. Praise the Lord! God is “holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel” (Psalm 22:3). No fig tree has blossomed? No grapes on the vines? The olive crops fail? The fields lie empty and barren? The flocks die in the fields? The cattle barns are empty? Yet, rejoice in the Lord! Arise! The Sovereign LORD renews strength! (Habakkuk 3).
