“I am sure this man who stops in from time to time is a holy man of God. Let’s build a small room for him on the roof and furnish it with a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. Then he will have a place to stay whenever he comes by” (2 Kings 4:9-10)
This unnamed woman of Shunem showed a selfless and generous heart. She’s described as a wealthy woman, but willing to choose some inconvenience for herself. Prior to this decision, she “urged him (Elisha) to come to her home for a meal” and afterwards “whenever he passed that way, he would stop there for something to eat” (2 Kings 4:8). She adjusted her schedules to accommodate Elisha’s visits. She also remodelled her home and built “a small room for him.” The room didn’t exist. She built it just right to have the needful things: a bed to rest, a table to read/eat, a chair to seat on, and a lamp to read. She was thoughtful and deliberate and a seemingly overwhelmed Elisha had to ask: “We appreciate the kind concern you have shown us. What can we do for you?” (2 Kings 4:13). Generosity has a voice that God hears (Proverbs 19:17).
Where do we need to make room for Jesus? In Luke 18a:28, Peter said to Jesus: “We’ve left our homes to follow you.” Peter and the other disciples made room and adjustments for Jesus. Their homes became His home (Luke 4:38). Jesus replied him: “Yes and I assure you that anyone who leaves home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the Kingdom of God will receive much more in this present age and eternal life in the age to come” (Luke 18:29-30).
