“Then the LORD said to Elijah, “Go and live in the village of Zarephath, near the city of Sidon. I have instructed a widow there to feed you” (1 Kings 17:8)
It is good, for our faith, to remember how God has helped us or others before. The Lord who commanded Elijah to go to a widow was the same Lord who has earlier told him: “Go to the east and hide by Kerith Brook, near where it enters the Jordan River. Drink from the brook and eat what the ravens bring you, for I have commanded them to bring you food” (1 Kings 17:3-4). And it was so. Elijah did as the Lord said and “the ravens brought him bread and meat each morning and evening, and he drank from the brook” (1 Kings 17:6) as the Lord said.
It is also needful for us to hear every word of God (Luke 8:18). God said to Elijah “Go and LIVE in the village of Zarephath….” The ESV says: “Arise, go to Zarephath… and DWELL there”, while the NIV says “Go at once to Zarephath… and STAY there.” To ‘dwell’ or ‘live’ or ‘stay’ meant it was not something for a moment, but for a long time! Elijah heard it and believed and it no longer mattered that he saw a widow who was gathering sticks, about to prepare her last meal as she said. God had said “Go at once to Zarephath… and STAY THERE.” He believed God will supply! Jesus said: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Father, help me to hear with the understanding of faith every word You speak. Amen.
