“As Jesus and His followers arrived at Jericho, a blind beggar was sitting by the roadside. When he heard the crowd approaching, he asked, “What’s all this commotion about?” “It’s Jesus!” they said. “Jesus the Nazarene is passing by” (Luke 18:35-37)

This blind beggar must have heard about Jesus and now Jesus was passing by before him. Here was Christ, who is grace personified, passing by and the blindman in faith shouted: “Jesus, Son of David, have pity and show me mercy!” (Luke 18:38). At this point, we would think the people will hear his shout, bring him to Jesus and beckon on Jesus to do something. On the contrary, Luke 18:39 says: “Those in the front of the crowd scolded him and warned him to be quiet….” They were without mercy towards him. They had no regard for him, his looks or his need. Instead, they scolded him, warning him to be quiet. People may be deaf to your shouts for mercy, but not the Lord. Exodus 2:23-24 recounts: “The Israelites continued to groan under their burden of slavery., they cried out for help, and their cry rose up to God. God heard their groaning.” God hears! This blind beggar shouted even more: “Jesus, Son of David, show me mercy!” Suddenly Jesus stopped and directed those nearby, “Bring the man over to Me.” Jesus heard the man Himself! Though the crowd was noisy, yet Jesus heard him. No one commended him to Jesus, still Jesus heard him. No one spoke on his behalf, yet Jesus heard him. “Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear” (Isaiah 59:1). Let no voice dishearten us from reaching out to Jesus at all times! Jesus hears us!
