“Instead, remind each other of God’s goodness, and be thankful” (Ephesians 5:4)

Writing to the Ephesians, Paul urged them to ‘remind each other of God’s goodness, and be thankful’ instead of engaging in lewd talks that actually bring no profit. It is a healthy habit speaking of God’s goodness and being thankful. The Psalmist testified: “I was glad for the suggestion of going to Jerusalem, to the Temple of the Lord” (Psalm 122:1) He was encouraged to be in God’s presence and He ultimately became glad. When he got there, He sang: “Now we are standing here inside the crowded city. All Israel—Jehovah’s people—have come to worship as the law requires, to thank and praise the Lord” (Psalm 122:2-4). While in there he saw the goodness of God and he saw judges answering to the cases of the people. Moved by what he saw, his perspective was influenced and He sang: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ‘May those who love you prosper. May there be peace inside your walls and safety in your palaces.’ For the sake of my relatives and friends I say to Jerusalem: ‘Peace be with you!’ For the sake of the house of the Lord our God I pray for your prosperity” (Psalm 122:6-9). From an encouragement, it ended in a heartfelt gladsome prayer!

Ephesians 5:19 exhorts us: “Speak to one another with the words of psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing hymns and psalms to the Lord with praise in your hearts. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, always give thanks for everything to God the Father.” Father, help us to continually remind each other about Your goodness and be thankful. Amen.
